For one thing, it came in the middle of summer when there was no school. We usually got together with extended family and the kids all played games and made noise all day long - usually with cap guns. Late in the day we had hot dogs, watermelon, and homemade ice cream. My state didn't allow personal fireworks, but after dark, we did have sparklers. I still like to see the holiday celebrated, and I still love the colors red, white, and blue.
